SELF - REFLECTION OF BIOCHEMISTRY ( TASK 1 )
TASK 1 : SELF - REFLECTION ON BIOCHEMISTRY ( STB1083 )
SHARMINAA
Hello, today is my first class in biochemistry which is conducted by Dr .Hashimatul. Today's lecture is based on introductIon to biochemistry. Basically what meant by biochemistry? Biochemistry describes the chemistry of the living cell and study the life on a molecular cell. The also a related between biochemistry and organic chemistry. For instant, biochemistry study related to reactions occur in living cells whereby organic chemistry reactions take place in the laboratory. Moreover, roles of enzymes as catalyst and role of nucleic acids as information -carrying molecules are discovered from biochemistry. I also learned the fundamental biochemical principle for variety of fields. For example, medicine and clinical, agriculture and industry. Biochemistry is acting an important role in real world to improve antibiotics and medications to cure diseases. It alos helping to produce transgenic crops and industrial materials such as enzyme. Today's lecture, I have refreshed with basic structure of biomolecules of carbon compounds like methane and aldehye. This class helps me to recall back biomolecules structure and their examples that I have already learned in STPM. It make me more clearer about the 3 study areas of biochemistry which is conformational, metabolism and informational. I also recalled back some functions and characteristics of organelle.

By the end of this lesson, I’m able to get know what is biochemistry all about. Biochemistry describes the chemistry of living cells and also helps us to understand the chemical reactions that happens in human body. Apart from that, I also understood that biochemistry is applicable in various fields of our daily lives such as medicine, agriculture and industry. For example, in medicine, biochemistry is used in gene therapy which is the method of introducing of normal genes into cells in place pf missing order of genetic disorders. Biochemistry is also used in diagnostic and monitoring of diseases. Secondly, in agriculture, biochemistry is used to prevent diseases and also increase the production of yield. Finally, biochemistry can be classified into three main area of study which is conformational, metabolism and informational. Conformational is the three-dimensional arrangements of biomolecules, metabolism is the biochemical pathways like glycolysis and informational is language for communication between cells.
BRANDON
Hello. Today, I learned about biochemistry which is also known as macromolecules; carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. Biochemistry gives big impact to our everyday live practice. For instance, washing our clothes which have sweat stains. This stain can be removed by proteases.Besides, biochemistry also involve in breakdown of long carbohydrates by enzyme, amylase. These are fews applications of biochemistry in our daily routine. Apart from that, I also learned a little bit about water. Water is a polar molecule because it has electrons which are shared unequally. Water is also a good solvent for polar and ionic compound(hydrophilic). Last characteristic of water that I had learned is, water is amphiprotic, which means, it may act as both acid and base. The higher the H+, the lower the pH. The most interesting part is, why the ice float, even it is a solid? Answer: because of the presence of frozen hydrogen bond. Water molecule is made up of one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms strongly joined to each other with covalent bonds.
